Unpreserved specimens: Transfer the liquid or soft stool specimen to a clean, dry container. Avoid contamination with water or urine. Label the container and transport to the laboratory at 2 to 25°C. Avoid mixing toilet paper, water or soap with the specimen. Cary-Blair preserved specimens: Transfer the liquid or soft stool specimen to a 15ml transport device according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid contamination with water or urine. Label the container and transport to the laboratory at 2 to 25°C. Avoid mixing toilet paper, water or soap with the specimen.

Clinical Utility
Extended Enteric Bacterial Panel detects the following stool pathogens: • Salmonella spp. • Campylobacter spp. (jejuni and coli) • Shigella spp. / Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) • Shiga toxin 1 (stx1) / Shiga toxin 2 (stx2) genes (found in Shiga toxin-producing E. coli - STEC) as well as Shigella dysenteriae, which can possess a Shiga toxin gene (stx) that is identical to the stx1 gene of STEC. • Plesiomonas shigelloides • Vibrio (V. vulnificus, V. parahaemolyticus and V. cholerae) • Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) heat-labile enterotoxin (LT)/heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) genes • Yersinia enterocolitica
